The nursery in Maasdijk is the main location of Maarel Orchids. In an ultra-modern building all cultivation-technical actions take place; starting with potting the basic material and cultivation, and ending with sorting and preparing for delivery. Behind the firmly automated warehouse and the offices lies 90,000 m2 of modern greenhouses, which create the optimal cultivation environment for the millions of potted Phalaenopsis that leave the nursery each year.
Because all actions with the plants, from potting and caring to sorting and packaging, take place in the processing area, the environment and climate in the greenhouses stay optimal. In addition, the advanced computerisation of many intensive actions makes it possible for us to create the ideal work environment for our co-workers. The nursery is located close to the logistics centre of FloraHolland in Naaldwijk. Naturally customers are welcome to visit our showroom and see for themselves what products and special creations are possible. At both locations the energy supply is taken care of as efficiently as possible. For this we have two combined heat and power stations in Maasdijk, with which we convert natural gas into electricity and heat. The electricity we generate via total energy is used to create light for the plants in the spring and autumn. In the summer months this electricity is used to cool the greenhouses. The heat, which is released as a ‘residual product’ while generating this electricity, is stored in a buffer and is used to create an optimal climate in the greenhouses at night or at times other than the summer months.
The excitation capacity of the two total energy installations in Maasdijk is 6 MW. The buffer tank in Maasdijk has a content of 2100 m3. The total yearly production of electricity at Maarel Orchids is about 45,000 MWh. The electricity we do not use for ourselves, we supply back to the net. The total energy provides a far more efficient energy production than would be possible with large energy supply companies. In addition, with our total energy systems we make a contribution to reducing the imbalance at the energy network.
